Peer-to-Peer Learning

One of the unique aspects of the Ripple Effect - Calgary Current is the opportunity for peer-to-peer knowledge transfer. This happens through a variety of community outreach and public engagement commitments such as presentations, action days, youth conferences, and booth displays.

Classroom & Community Presentations:

The Ripple Effect - Calgary Current has given a number of presentations to community groups such as the Girl Guides (Calgary) and the YMCA, providing audiences with a unique 'youth' perspective on current water issues along with simple, tangible ways to conserve water every day. The Ripple Effect - Calgary Current has also had a chance to learn from their peers through involvements in the Model Arctic Council (MAC) in Whitehorse (2010) and by hosting the Youth Driving Environmental Action (YDEA) conference in Calgary last spring.

Acting on a winning proposal from a local water contest, the group is currently developing classroom presentations targeted at elementary and junior high-aged students.  These presentations cater to a variety of learning styles and are facilitated by the Calgary Current youth members. With a common objective of informing audiences about our local watershed (the Bow River sub-basin) and empowering young people to take action in their daily lives, these school presentations are sure to have a lasting impact!

Action Days:

In the past, the Ripple Effect - Calgary Current has participated in a RiverWatch tour in order to learn more about the Bow River and its biodiversity.

This Spring (2012) the Ripple Effect - Calgary Current will be supporting the implementation of the Native Plant Campaign, winner of Agrium's Caring for Our Watershed contest. The Native Plant Campaign will involve students beyond the Ripple Effect as a day is spent learning about and planting species of plants and shrubs that are native to the region, in order to enhance the riparian biodiversity along the banks of the Bow River. Check back for more details!

Booth Displays:

The Ripple Effect - Calgary Current is a regular participant in youth environmental events such as Ecopolooza and the Mayor's Environment Expo. This year, in addition to these great events, you will be able to see us and our interactive display at the Calgary Teacher's Convention February 16 & 17, as well as at Inside Education's "Navigate: Water Literacy Youth Summit" career and learning exhibition March 16 at the Delta Kananaskis.

Youth are not merely receptacles of information and knowledge; they are also powerful peer educators and leaders. The Ripple Effect - Calgary Current encourages its members to pass forward what they know, what they are curious or concerned about, and what they are passionate about. In this sense, the Calgary Current's impact reaches well beyond its membership.
